Wedge Sole or Lug Sole?

When shopping around for the best pair of boots for your job, you’re likely to come across two main types of boots with either a wedge or a lug sole. It goes without saying that a boot’s sole makes a big difference in wear and function. So how do you choose which ones are right for you? 

What is a wedge sole?

A wedge sole, often accompanied by a moc toe design, runs the entire length of the outsole. That means from heel to toe, you have one solid piece of rubber (or other material) that allows for a larger contact surface area with the ground. Compared to a lug sole, there is no gap between the heel and the toe, providing more support under your foot’s arch and an overall more comfortable experience. 

Pros 

• More comfortable, especially on flat, hard surfaces. The increased surface area of the soles allow them to more evenly distribute impact when walking. This makes your experience much more comfortable on a daily basis and can help reduce stress on your back and knees in the long run. 
• They’re more lightweight. Similar to the previous point, the lighter weight is more comfortable, allowing you to be on your feet more without as much fatigue. 
• Tracks less dirt. Because the treads on the bottom of the soles are not as deep, they don’t collect dirt or debris as much, making them and your living spaces a little easier to maintain. 

Cons

• Less traction on uneven surfaces. The main tradeoff here is that a solid wedge sole has less traction especially when you’re not on a hard,flat surface. 
• Soles can wear out more quickly. And depending on how they were originally manufactured, you may not even have the ability to re-sole them. 

A wedge sole is  best for framing, construction, or any job that has you working on hard surfaces. A wedge sole boot can be worn on a daily basis as well. You don’t have to be performing physically demanding tasks in order to benefit from their all around comfort.

What is a lug sole?

A lug sole boot is basically a heeled work boot. There’s a slight elevation in the heel, leaving a gap of space in between the midsole and the ground. While this means there’s less contact with the ground, it also allows for better traction and stability across different surfaces. 

Pros

• Relatively more traction on uneven surfaces. This is especially important for folks that often work outside in various weather conditions and terrains. The treads on the sole, plus the raised heel offer more stability compared to a wedge sole. 
• They’re safer for climbing. The heel allows you to “lock” yourself in place when climbing ladders.

Cons

• Can be heavier and not as comfortable as a wedge sole. Because your weight is less evenly distributed, you may experience more pressure on the heel and ball of your foot, especially after long hours. 

A lug sole is best for people that work outdoors in varying terrain, or often climb ladders. Think construction workers, linesmen, loggers, etc… They’re also extremely versatile and can be worn on an everyday shoe.
