Preventing a blister
There are a few things you can do to prevent blisters from forming while working in your boots. Blisters are caused by a combination of moisture and friction when your feet move around in and rub up against your boots. Even if you’re not blister prone, these tips will help you feel more comfortable throughout the workday.

- Socks make a big difference, not only for comfort but also in reducing moisture and friction. Choose socks that fit well without any excess fabric where you don’t need it and opt for synthetic fibers that keep your feet dry. Check out more tips on choosing the right socks for your boots.
- Use foot powders to to keep your feet and your boots dry. Not only will it help prevent blisters, but it’ll also stop odors and bacteria.
- Supportive insoles can keep your feet from sliding around inside, but be careful that they’re not too tight that you’re actually more brone the blistering.
Treating a blister
As soon as you start to feel a blister forming, do something about it. Treating these “hot spots” early on is key to preventing a full on blister from ruining your workweek.
- Step 1: If your skin is red and/or raw, apply antibiotic ointment cover it with an adhesive bandage before moving on to Step 2.
- Step 2: Apply duct tape or another similar bandage to prevent further friction. Don’t remove or replace the covering until you’re back home and out of a working environment. Opening it up might aggravate the area or expose it to infection.
- Step 3: Put on a pair of clean, dry socks before getting back on your feet.
If you have a full blown blister, generally, you shouldn’t pop it unless you’re willing to risk infection.
