Is It Time to Replace Your Worn Out Work Boots?

Is It Time to Replace Your Worn Out Work Boots?

Your boots are made tough for a reason. Day in, day out they take a real beating. It’s all in a day’s work, but at some point your boots might get too beat up to do their job. Of course wear and tear is normal, but when do you know it’s time for a fix or even an upgrade?

If you’re thinking it’s time for a change, there are two steps you can take before pulling the trigger on buying a brand new pair. You can get them resoled or rebuilt to save a few bucks and extend the life of your current pair.

Not only is this a more sustainable option, it also preserves the worn-in comfortable feel of your current pair. The more you wear your boots, the better soles and leather mold and flex to your gate. No use in throwing all that away if you don’t have to.

But when the time comes, it’s much safer to make repairs to maintain all the functionality you need from your boots.

Resoling your boots is exactly what it sounds like. A good pair of work boots is constructed to be resoled. But that depends on their welting. Be sure to double check that your boots were built to be eventually resoled. Otherwise, you’re better off getting another pair.

Generally speaking, when a pair of boots is resoled, the outsole is removed then restitched to the midsole. Some brands offer their own repair and resoling services. But you can also get them done at most cobblers or shoe repair shops.

It’s time to resole when…

  • The treads provide less traction than you’re used to
  • If the treads are unevenly worn down to the point that it affects your gate
  • The welting shows signs of fraying or separating
  • You notice moisture entering your boots when they didn’t used to

Rebuilding your boots can mean a few things, but generally it entails repairing or replacing certain parts of your boot that aren’t the sole. It can be as minimal as replacing eyelets to fully deconstructing and reconstructing the leather piece by piece.

If you notice damage to your boots you can have them inspected by a professional to see what work needs to be done. This can include work to the leather upper, the insole, the shank, you name it. But again, a rebuild is oftentimes a much cheaper alternative than getting a brand new pair of boots.

Long story short, if you’re happy with the boots you have, you won’t have to get rid of them if you don’t want to - provided you keep up with regular maintenance and repairs.

An investment in your work boots is an investment in yourself and wellbeing. A good pair of workboots will keep you safe and comfortable on the job. And your body will thank you in the long run.
