4 Ways to Break in Tanker Boots

4 Ways to Break in Tanker Boots

There is an unofficial rule among dancers and athletes. It is that you don't compete in new shoes. You have to break them in before you take on the ring or dance floor. The same goes for work boots and protective footwear, such as hiking, tanker, combat, and construction boots.

The right size, fit, wear, and use, all play a role in ensuring comfort and preventing blisters. To achieve this, here's a quick rundown of how to break in military-style boots.

Dry Method

The dry method is used for non-waterproof boots or tanker boots with a high-gloss shine. This also works well for police and everyday work boots. It is simply wearing the footwear before getting them in the field.

Here's how you do the dry method to break in tanker boots:

  1. Wear nylon socks underneath thick socks to help prevent blisters.
  2. Wear your boots for not more than an hour the first time you put them on. You can wear them around the house or office—in simple tasks that won't put too much pressure on your feet.
  3. Increase the duration each day until your construction boots are comfortable enough to wear. This will validate the comfort level of your footwear.
  4. As you go, you will be able to identify which areas are prone to rubbing and blistering. Apply moleskin to those for cushion.
  5. You can try running or walking a trail after the initial break-in to speed up the process.

Wet Method

Breaking in tanker boots using the wet method is faster than the dry method. But it is an option only for waterproof boots and boots with leather uppers and a high-gloss shine.

Here's how to break in waterproof construction boots using water:

  1. Fill a bucket or bathtub with lukewarm water.
  2. Soak your boots for 4 to 5 minutes. Make sure to saturate the entire footwear and that there are no dry spots.
  3. Drain out the water.
  4. Walk-in your boots with two pairs of socks. Having layers of socks will leave you with more wiggle room when your boots dry.
  5. Wear your boots for an entire day. You can dry your feet or change socks to take breaks.
  6. Take your boots off and remove the insoles. Lay them out separately to dry outside under the sun or in front of a fan.

Other Wet Break-in Methods

Conventional Wet Cowboy Method

Put on your waterproof leather boot and get into a shallow river. Then, you walk until they are dry.

Soldiers' Shower Method

Wear your army-style boots while taking a shower and keep them on for an entire day. The boots will gradually conform to the shape of your feet and become comfortable.
